When the Plan Changes… and Turns Out Even Better: Our Most Joyful Day Through Unschooling

when a plan falls apart, there are always alternatives—and often, the unexpected turns out to be even better.

Today I want to share one of those experiences that stay forever in your heart. 💖

The plan was clear: visit Artrotheca and spend a morning surrounded by exotic animals. But when we got there, I was surprised to find it closed for two weeks. 😟 For a moment, I thought: “What do we do now?” 😱

But then I remembered something I always try to teach Enzo: when a plan falls apart, there are always alternatives—and often, the unexpected turns out to be even better.

And that’s exactly what happened.

An Unexpected Picnic and a Cultural Journey 🌏

That “failed plan” turned into a beautiful day. We had a picnic lunch in a lovely little park in San Isidro, discovered a new route on the Metropolitano bus system, and, as if that weren’t enough, found a cozy Asian spot in downtown Lima.

This year at home we’ve been exploring China, so it couldn’t have been more perfect. Enzo tried the famous Min Pao for the first time, sipped bubble tea, and enjoyed his favorite Siu Mai. Everything was delicious and affordable.

Once again, I realized that unschooling and self-directed learning are everywhere in daily life: tasting a new dish, exploring a different place, or diving into a new experience are all valuable forms of learning. 🌏🥢 lugar diferente o lanzarse a una nueva experiencia también son aprendizajes valiosos. 🌏🥢

The Best Playdate of Our Lives 🎉

The afternoon had only just begun, and what seemed like a failed plan turned into the best playdate we’ve ever had! We went to Mr Joy, a place full of games and adventures:

  • Slides

  • Bumper cars

  • Labyrinths and climbing nets

  • Ball pits

  • Inflatable gladiator battles

  • Air-cannon ball fights

  • Skating

For less than 20 dollars, we enjoyed three hours of non-stop fun.

The most incredible part wasn’t just seeing Enzo happy, but living the experience with him: I jumped, climbed, slid, laughed out loud, and played like a child again. In that moment, I understood something powerful: sometimes the best gift we can give our children isn’t a toy or a big trip, but our presence, our laughter, and our time together.

What This Day Taught Us About Unschooling and Respectful Parenting ✨

That day left us with lessons that go far beyond fun:

  • Flexibility and resilience: plans change, but there’s always beauty in the unexpected.

  • Living, self-directed learning: culture, new routes through the city, physical activity, and even new flavors turned into learning experiences.

  • Bonding and community: sharing the day with friends (thank you, Luz and Santi 💕) multiplied the joy and strengthened our connections.

In unschooling, we learn to trust life, to go with the flow, and to discover that childhood itself is the best teacher when lived with respect and connection.

To You, Dear Mama 💌

Don’t be afraid to improvise, to change direction, or to dive in and play like a child again. I promise those moments are worth gold. Gift your child laughter, adventure, and time with you… because that’s the most beautiful learning of all.

This is how unschooling and conscious parenting remind us that we don’t need a classroom to learn—just the willingness to live our children’s childhood by their side. 🌱

And you? Have you ever had a day where a plan that didn’t work out turned into something even better? I’d love to hear your story in the comments. 💬
